Obstetrics and gynecology (often abbreviated as OB/GYN) is a medical specialty focused on the care of women's reproductive health, encompassing both pregnancy and childbirth (obstetrics) and the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the female reproductive organs (gynecology). OB/GYNs provide a wide range of services, including prenatal care, delivery, contraception, treatment of infections, and management of conditions like endometriosis and fibroids. Obstetrics specifically deals with pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Obstetricians manage both normal and high-risk pregnancies, including complications during labor and delivery. They also play a crucial role in educating and supporting women throughout the pregnancy journey. Gynecology focuses on the female reproductive system, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes, cervix, and vagina. Gynecologists diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, such as infections, menstrual problems, infertility, and cancers of the reproductive organs. They also provide preventative care, including Pap smears and other screenings. Key Differences and Overlap: While some practitioners specialize solely in either obstetrics or gynecology, many choose to practice both, becoming OB/GYNs. OB/GYNs can act as primary care physicians for women, providing routine checkups and managing various health concerns. Some subspecialties within OB/GYN include maternal-fetal medicine (high-risk pregnancies), reproductive endocrinology (infertility), and gynecologic oncology (cancers).
